Karl James "KJ" Noons is an American mixed martial arts fighter and boxer who currently competes in the lightweight division. He holds a mixed martial arts record of 7 wins and 2 losses and a professional boxing record of 10 wins and 2 losses.[2]

MMA career

In 2005, Noons won the PRIDE Fighting Championship's auditions as the best striker. However, he reached an impasse with the group when it came to signing a contract. In 2006, Noons signed a deal with promoter Gary Shaw that allowed him to participate in both boxing and mixed martial arts. He was defeated by Charles "Krazy Horse" Bennett in EliteXC's inaugural event in February 2007, but rebounded with a win over James Edson Berto at the first ShoXC event. He then fought Nick Diaz for the vacant 160 pound title at EliteXC. The two fighters exchanged somewhat evenly on the feet except for the occasion Diaz was dropped by a straight right counterpunch from Noons. KJ repeatedly stuffed most of Diaz's takedown attempts except for two in the entire round, and opened a cut below Diaz's eyebrow with a knee whilst Diaz shot earlier in the round. Diaz lost via doctor stoppage due to multiple cuts on his forehead. On June 14, 2008 Noons defeated Yves Edwards in Hawaii to defend his EliteXC Lightweight belt.[3]

During the post-fight interviews, Nick Diaz was brought into the cage with his brother Nate Diaz. After Nick spoke over the microphone to Noons, Karl Noons, KJ's father, lunged at him prompting Nate Diaz to throw a water bottle at him. The Diaz brothers were quickly escorted out of the cage by a group of security staff. During interviews the next day Nick claimed Karl was intoxicated and overreacting. Meanwhile Karl claimed his incident was prompted by the thrown bottle. Video replay of the event showed Nate throwing the bottle after Karl jumped at Nick. [citation needed]

The bout was scheduled to take place between August and October, but Noons has not agreed to a rematch with Diaz since their altercation.

On September 18, 2008, EliteXC stripped Noons of his lightweight title.[4] Jeremy Lappen, head of Fight Operations at Elite XC, commented that "It's a very unfortunate situation but we cannot have belt holders who refuse to fight the top contenders. We want champions who will fight anyone, anytime, anyplace. That's the mentality all champions should have".

In February 2009, Strikeforce CEO, Scott Coker offered Noons a fight with Strikeforce 155 lb. Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson, which he turned down in order to focus on his boxing career.[5] His last boxing match was a fight at 159 Lbs. on March 21, 2009 against Detroit native James Countryman. Karl was outclassed in the fight losing to Countryman by a unanimous 6 round decision. This leaves "King Karl" with a professional boxing record of 8 -2 . Five wins by way of Knockout.[6]

On December 2nd, 2009, Noons signed on with mixed martial arts organization Strikeforce[7]
