Pirouz (Persian: پیروز) was an Asiatic cheetah born on 1 May 2022. The child of two Asiatic cheetahs named "Iran" and "Firuz", Pirouz was the only surviving cub of the three that were born.[1][2] Being one of the last remaining Asiatic cheetahs in the world, Pirouz has reached great popularity since he was born.
Life
Pirouz was the only surviving cub of three live births of the cheetah "Iran". They were born in captivity via a C section operation. This resulted in the mother not recognizing the cubs, thus forcing the cubs to live separately and without maternal care. Two of the cubs died after a few days from birth, making Pirouz the only surviving cub.[3]
He is projected to remain in Tehran for until he is 12 months old, after which he may be transferred to the Khar Turan National Park.[4]
In February 2023, Pirouz was reportedly transferred to a veterinary hospital due to health complications.[5]
Pirouz was reported deceased at the veterinarian hospital at 9:00 AM 2/27/23 Iran time.
Habitat
Pirouz was to stay in Tehran until he became 12 months old and would have been transferred to Turan.
Popular culture
Pirouz and the danger of its extinction has been mentioned in the Grammy Award winning song Baraye causing a widespread public attention.[6]
