Robert J. Rubel, PHD (born Robert Jack Rubel II; October 5, 1944), a.k.a. Dr. Bob, is an American author[1] and educational speaker[2]. He specializes in the area of alternative sexuality, with a focus in the fields of BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Sado-masochism) and TPE relationships (Total Power Exchange, such as Master/slave or Owner/property) and is an author of many books on the subject[3].
Rubel has been presenting at alternative sexuality conferences or conducting focused weekend workshops routinely since 2007. He has prepared and presented keynote speeches[4], lecture and discussion based classes, as well as skills-based demos throughout the U.S., Canada, and Australia[5]. He maintains an online blog through his kink oriented website[6] and has produced 80 webinars on a wide range of BDSM and Master/slave topics[7].
Rubel is the co-author (with his partner) of six books related to BDSM or TPE topics since 2014 they have published through their own Red Eight Ball Press. Prior to establishing their own publishing company, Rubel published nearly a dozen books in related fields with the Nazca Plains publishing house[8].
Career
Dr. Rubel’s professional life began in earnest in the fall of 1969 when he entered Boston University to explore how large school districts dealt with students who committed crimes on school campuses. There, he majored in Urban Education after having previosly taught in a Title IX school. He was awarded an Ed.M (Masters of Education) the following year (1970). Upon completing his degree, Rubel entered the University of Wisconsin through a Ford Foundation funded grant to the University's School of Education, Department of Urban Education Policy Studies. His research explored disorders, disruptions, and crimes in public schools from 1950-1975.[9] In 1977, he was awarded his doctorate in Education with a minor in criminology. Ultimately, his dissertation was published by Lexington Books (Springfield, MA) as: The Unruly School: Disorders, Disruptions, and Crime[10]. Before his doctoral research was completed, Rubel was offered a Visiting Fellowship grant from the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice (1976) to document the literature and history of school-based crime and violence. Upon leaving the Justice Department in 1977, Robert Rubel and Peter Blauvelt founded the National Alliance for Safe Schools (NASS)[11]: Rubel served as its Director from inception until 1992[12][13][14][15]. The National Alliance for Safe Schools(a 501(c)(3) organization) was devoted to understanding and finding ways to prevent crimes committed by students in public schools. The NASS specialized in conducting “school security audits” for urban school districts. NASS also served until 1992 as the research and technical assistance affiliate of the National Association of School Safety & Law Enforcement Officials (NASSLEO)[16].
Rubel also gained extensive experience in nonprofit administration in his position with the National Alliance for Safe Schools (1977-1992) and also as the first Administrator of the American Association of Woodturners (1986-1988)[17]. Rubel became a Certified Association Executive (through the American Society of Association Executives).
Rubel has been an enthusiastic photographer for most of his life, and went professional with his photography starting in the 1990's[18].
In 2001 Dr. Rubel discovered his passion for kink as a lifestyle and began studying the field in depth. As a researcher, he began to categorize and structure the information he collected. That information evolved into a series of books on BDSM, sexuality, and "authority transfer" dynamics[19].
Dr. Rubel began giving presentations and lectures throughout North America and abroad in 2007, speaking on various aspects of the BDSM culture[20]. By 2007, he had twelve books in print Nazca Plains publishing house. During 2007-2008, Rubel served as the Series Editor for Power Exchange Books Resource Series[21], a group of books that evolved from Power Exchange Magazine (of which he was the managing editor)[22]. These resource books are early professional documentation and collections of essays on focused topics within the larger field of American BDSM. In 2009, his book, Squirms, Screams, and Squirts: Handbook for going from great sex to extraordinary sex was picked by Playboy Online and their #1 gift book recommendation for Valentine’s Day. Penthouse Forum also highlighted that book for their 2009 Valentine’s issue.
In 2014, Rubel and his partner (M. Jen Fairfield) established their own publishing house (Red Eight-Ball Press) and have written and published many additional books through this venue.
Awards and Honors
Dr. Rubel was the recipient of the 2008 Pantheon of Leather's “Community Choice Award (man)” award.[23]
He has served as a Judge for various leather contests[24], and is considered a subject matter expert[25] as well as an expert court witness in regards to BDSM and authority based relationships.

Power Exchange Books’ Resource Series
Robert J. Rubel served as the Series Editor for the following five books that addressed reasons for participating in a particular kind of kink activity rather than explain how to do that activity. Collectively, these books were called “Power Exchange Books’ Resource Series.”
As Series Editor, Rubel invited experts on particular BDSM topics to serve as Issue Coordinators. Issue Coordinators were guided (to a greater or lesser extent) about article contributors, the book’s theme, the logistics of contacting potential authors, writers’ guidelines, and a timeline to stay on schedule. Ultimately, the Series Editor conducted final edits for each article and pulled them into book format, submitted to the publisher.
The first four books in this Series are comprised of nine or ten articles of about 3,500 words each and Rubel worked closely with the Issue Coordinators. In two ways, the final book, Ropes, Bondage, and Power is an exception in this Series. First, rather than containing about 10 articles, it contains 19; second, Lee Harrington managed to total process on his own, including final edits and assembly.

Power Exchange Magazine
Robert Rubel served as the Managing Editor of Power Exchange Magazine in 2007-2008. The publisher, Herbert Moseley, used the pseudonym “Robert Steele” as the author.
After publishing nine issues, the publisher determined that there was not a sufficient market for a magazine and switched to a book format. He began publishing the Power Exchange Books’ Resource Series (immediately above) that Rubel also managed and edited.
