Sarupareen Brahmins or Saryuparin are a caste of North Indian Brahmins who reside on the eastern plain of the Saryu River. There are various subdivisions amongst these Brahmins. One group consists of disciples of three gotras (family clan names) i.e. Garga, Gautam, and Shandilya. Most gotras claim connection to a specific, Rishi (a sage or seer who heard a Veda from the Supreme Being Brahman. Of these the Garga's rishi and his disciples are the first who made their ashram for studies of The Yajurveda. The Gautam's Rishi and then the Shandilya's Rishi started the studies of The Yajurveda and The Sama Veda in their ashrams. These three gotras are graded highest amongst Saryupareen Brahmins. Also in the caste are 13 additional rishis whose disciples are known as the home of 13.

The folk saying is this branch of Brahmans came into origin after Lord Rama returned from Lanka and wanted to do ASHWAMEDHA YagYa, but the brahman families refused because he has killed a Brahman as Ravan though a RakSHas, was the son of a Brahman therfore killing him tantamount to killing a brahman, leading to Brahm-hatya, the most deadly sin mentioned in the shastras. No Brahman Family was ready to do the Yagya because of the taboo associated with the Brahm-hatya, so Lord Rama approached some Brahmin Families and prayed them to conduct the yagya and promised them Land, livestock and rulerships on other side of Saryu river if they would be boycotted from the society ,these families were boycotted and so they crossed the river and settled on the other side of river therefore the term, saryu- parin i.e those who crossed the river Saryu. The kanyakubj Brahmans i.e those who refused, boycotted them and till date marriages are not made between the two major divisions of Early Brahman Society.

The thinking behind the acceptance of the proposal of Lord Rama was that priests are supposed to conduct rituals and if they dont help a person in repenting for his sins what good are they for the society? Major surnames of Saryupariya Brahmins are Sharma, Tiwari, Tripathi, Shukla and Mishra.

The saryuparin were considered to be unorthodox[citation needed].
