One of Azzarello's signs

On April 19, 2024, at around 1:35 pm ET, Maxwell Azzarello, a 37-year-old man from St. Augustine, Florida,[1] self-immolated in Collect Pond Park, outside of the New York courthouse where jurors were being chosen for the New York state criminal trial of former U.S. President Donald Trump.[1][2][3] Azzarello posted a manifesto to his Substack before the incident, describing his intent to bring attention to a "totalitarian con" and that the U.S. government is "about to hit us with an apocalyptic fascist world coup."[4][5] He traveled from his Florida home to New York just days before the trial.[6] Before setting himself on fire, Azzarello threw leaflets into the air. He had also protested with signs the day before and gave an interview critical of the American government.[1] Officers arrived after a few minutes and extinguished the blaze before he was loaded into an ambulance and taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he is currently in critical condition.[1]
