Stephen Garcia (born February 15, 1988) is a quarterback for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. He is from Lutz, Florida and attended Thomas Jefferson High School where he had 8,000 yards passing and 83 touchdowns as well as 1,345 yards rushing and 17 rushing touchdowns. He also played basketball in high school.[1] Through 2010, Garcia has a 17-13 record as a starter for South Carolina and his statistics are as follows: 6,753 passing yards (43 TD, 32 INT) and 606 rushing yards (12 TD).

To open 2011 spring practices, Garcia was suspended for a week for violating team rules during bowl week in December 2010. In April 2011, it was announced that Garcia has been suspended indefinitely for showing up intoxicated and causing a disturbance at an SEC-mandated meeting designed to encourage good life choices beyond college.[2] The latest suspension represents the second of the spring and the fifth of his collegiate career.[3]

College career

Freshman

Although highly touted as a recruit, in his first weeks on campus in 2007, Garcia was suspended from spring practice after being arrested on two separate occasions in a three-week time-span.[4] In the Spring of 2008, Garcia was arrested again on alcohol related charges. In addition to paying a fine, he was suspended from the team and, as a condition of his reinstatement, required to undergo counseling, maintain a job, and make weekly reports to the university over the summer. He was reinstated earlier than expected in July 2008.[5] As a redshirt freshman in 2008, Garcia started three games for the Gamecocks. He was named SEC Freshman of the Week for his performance in a 24-17 victory over Kentucky (169 passing yards and 1 TD in a half of play). Garcia finished the 2008 season with 832 passing yards, 6 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. He added 198 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Sophomore

In 2009, with Garcia as their starting quarterback, the Gamecocks had a 7-6 record and made an appearance in the PapaJohns.com Bowl. Garcia posted four 300-yard passing games (Georgia, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Arkansas) with victories over two Top-25 opponents (Ole Miss and Clemson). The Gamecocks victory over the Rebels was the second defeat of a Top-5 opponent in program history. In the regular season finale against arch-rival Clemson, Garcia passed for 126 yards (3 TD's, 1 INT) and rushed for 46 yards. For the 2009 season, he passed for 2,862 yards with 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, adding 186 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Junior

In the 2010 season, the Gamecocks posted a 9-5 record (5-3 SEC), won the SEC East title, and finished #22 in both the AP and Coaches' Final Polls. Carolina got its first-ever win over a top-ranked opponent (Alabama) and beat division rivals Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee for the first time in the same season. The Gamecocks also defeated arch-rival Clemson for the second consecutive year and faced the eventual BCS national champion Auburn Tigers in the SEC Championship Game (56-17 loss). The season concluded with an appearance in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl against Florida State, who defeated Carolina 26-17. For the 2010 season, Garcia passed for 3,059 yards with 20 touchdowns and 14 interceptions (64.2 completion %), adding 222 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

Legal Troubles

Garcia has been arrested 3 times during his collegiate career. In February 2007, he was arrested for failing to stop on police command and public drunkeness.[6] In March 2007, he was arrested for malicious injury to personal property when he was caught keying a professor's car.[7] In March 2008, Garcia was arrested and cited for underage drinking.[8] Later that same evening, police were again called to his dormitory where Garcia admitted to pulling a fire alarm and discharging a fire extinguisher. Garcia was disciplined by the school for the incident, but no formal charges were filed.[9]
