Wasn't Kuchamakin the regent for the young Chickatawbut? Kuchamakin wasn't actually sachem.

Lesbian Stuff

Ok, this needs a rewrite on the Lesbian areas. Most people have no idea what a "sapphist" is, it's not in any current use, and this isn't meant to be a public flyer for lesbians to move to JP. If for whatever reason it's another gay location, fine. However, don't start using subjective terms like "populist" and "funky" (especially not funky) to sell the neighborhood. This isn't Re/Max.

History

My mother lived and worked in JP in the 60s and 70s, she saw hundreds of poor displaced families when the I-95 corridor was built. Can anyone elaborate on the socio-economic impact? -- WikidSmaht (talk) 08:26, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Does this article seem a little slanted?

Parts of it seem negative (see discussion of gentrification), and hardly objective at all. Am i the only one who thinks this?

GLad to hear it-- I'd hate to change something nobody else agreed on. I also think continually pointing out how the professionals and such are suburban-born is a little strange-- a huge chunk of the BOston area is suburban-born, and a huge chunk of every city in America is as well. It's part of how cities work. The comments on it in this article seem judgemental, and also irrelevant. Agree?

Yeah. As an aside, it makes conversations easier to follow if you (a) sign your comments with ~~~~ and (b) You use a : to indicate a new section.

I see this page as needing some serious rewriting, inluding structural changes. As much as I'm interested in the beer brewery information, it's too long for an article this size. I don't recall any discussion of the importance of church parishes in JP - churches were a huge part of the social life of the community. The building of the train line - now the Amtrak line - is ignored. Some of the "sections" are two sentences long - not long enought to make a section worth while. Major changes

I've made some major and minor changes to this page. My aim is to remove unnecessary detail, (all the bus lines) add relevant information (public libraries), remove POV type writing (the Great Streetcar Debate) and develop a proper history of dear old JP. Monument photo added

Mary Baker Eddy & Forest Hills?

I was surprised to see Mary Baker Eddy listed as a notable resident. I thought I was familiar with all the places she lived. Is this a mistaken reference to her last residence at 400 Beacon Street in Chestnut Hill Brookline? clariosophic 03:25, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Regarding Urban Renewal Undo

I undid the Undo. I had integrated some of the information in the immediatly predeeding paragraphs. The section you replaced has two statements flagged for lack of citation, and the writing is not clear. Building were not torn down because the area was deemed blighted - there was nothing wrong with the housing in the area, it certainly wasn't a slum. My Aunt and Uncle lived in a house that was torn down on Everett St., so I knew it well. Any thing that is not included in the end of the previous section can be added to the Urban Renewal section - like the supermarket development on the Plant Shoe site and the festival without using Undo. Plans

I've pretty well rewritten much of this page. I'm planning to take some text out of the "JP enters the 20th century" and put it in a new section for the mid-late 20th century. That will end the History section, and the "Present Day" section might get a few more lines. This may take a little time, because I'll have to get references for things like the Hispanic immigration to JP and the busing years. MarkinBoston 03:15, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Please note: much of the information in the history sections is taken from a single source - the Local Attachments book that is cited multiple times. Anything not cited to another source can be assumed to be taken from that book. Citing it any more often withing the text would be overkill.MarkinBoston 16:08, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Need better Photos

MarkinBoston user:MarkedinBostonhas made a valient effort to improve this entry. Unfortunately, his photography skills could be improved. There were some excellent, historic photos on this sight that have been unecessarity removed and replaced with low quality, camera-phone-like snapshots. I would encourage him to repost some of those which have been removed and others to post high quality images that have not appeared in the past or may have been lost. cwinder 23:44, 21 August 2007.
