Kes's age was a topic of critical commentary.

StarTrek.com's thought Kes was too young to be dating Neelix and described the storyline as "a little icky".[1] Science fiction author Sylvia Spruck Wrigley interpreted Kes as undergoing puberty in "Elogium", writing that it introduces questions about Neelix starting a relationship with a prepubescent girl.[2] Discussing the same episode, Bustle's Marie Southard Ospina praised the depiction of a woman voluntarily not having a baby, but felt that Kes's age and the Ocampa's short life span made the scenes "a little creepy".[3]
