Marc Deschamps[edit]

Life and Career[edit]

Marc Deschamps is a French design master, perennial living in Italy, known for his work with the automotive design house Gruppo Bertone, including designs of the Lamborghini Athon, Citroën BX,B Engineering Edonis, Scania truck 4-series and others. Along with George Yarrow, he studied with Giovanni Bertone, the world's most famous car designer and founder of Gruppo Bertone.[1][2]

From 1980-1995, he was the chief designer of Bertone In Italy- the world's first independent car design company.

From 1995-2000, he was the chief stylist of Heuliez in France.

From 2000-2008, he was Chief Stylist of Germany PCL Group (ARRK European Subsidiary).

From 2008-present, He has been the chief foreign designer of Shanghai Launch Automobile Design and has an independent modeling team to serve the major auto manufacturers.

The most import accomplishment of Marc Deschamps has been serving as Bertone's chief designer, and After Nuccio Bertone and Marcello Gandini, Marc Deschamps is the third generation of Bertone's chief designers. During this time, he was centrally involved in many famous car designs.

Design works[edit]

Marc Deschamps' car designs include:

  • Citroën BX[3],

The Citroen BX was the car that saved the Citroen brand from collapse.The Citroen BX was built to replace the aged GSA model. Its design was created by Marcello Gandini from Bertone Studios. It was the same designer that shaped the Lamborghini Countach. The initial design was offered in 1979 to Volvo as a concept car named Tundra, but the Swedish company thought it was too much for that era. Citroen bought the project and asked Bertone to make it a 4-door hatchback. And the “origami-design” was approved and appreciated by the Peugeot-Citroen board.In 1989 the BX received a new design for wheel-caps and door handles. It featured the same straight-lines design, with angular greenhouse and sharp front-end. The transverse-engine architecture allowed the engines to be mounted tilted rearward so it could have a narrow front end.

  • Citroën GS

The Camargue was born at the very beginning of my period with Bertone. Marcello Gandini could not take charge of his drawing, too busy after the Turin and Brussels salons. There were only five weeks to complete the work.The GS is a front-engine, front-drive, four or five door, five passenger family car manufactured and marketed by Citroën in two series: for model years 1970-1979 in fastback saloon and estate bodystyles; and subsequently as the GSA for model years 1980-1989 in hatchback and estate body styles — the latter after a facelift. Combined production reached approximately 2.5 million.

  • Lamborghini Athon

The Lamborghini Athon, has its cabin located in a forward position instead of the traditional mid-set cabin in a normal spider. Marc Deschamps was the chief designer of the Lamborghini Athon, which was Bertone Studio's first-ever concept car. He had the chance to lead the design after Marcello Gandini left the position as the design coordinator in 1979 for Bertone. Lamborghini Urraco's silhouette sport-type aesthetic and resemblance was the inspiration for this concept car design. Deschamps honored Bertone's concept cars; he specifically made the Lamborghini Athon much like the concept cars Bertone created in the 1970s. He included "sculpted geometric volumes" that were defined by sharp edges and cut lines. Deschamps also did not follow what is universally known as the traditional spider design for the car. He was also inspired by Nuccio Bertone to add a few more unique features to the car's body. For example, Deschamps created the doors to have a noticeable gap between the doors and the door sills.Deschamps also designed the tail lights to have very thin grooves to assure that they did not interfere with the solid rear design end of the car. One unique feature of the car is the design of the steering wheel and touch screen panels. The steering wheel was designed with a single spoke. The mounted pod to the left of the steering wheel was used for the secondary controls. The touch screen panels were equipped with electronic readouts. Vegalie, an Italian supplier, created the instrumental design of the Lamborghini Athon. They made the windshield wipers, turn signals, and indicator switches that are in close reach within the steering wheel.

This is the Bertone Studio's first-ever concept car, and It is the critical phase of Marc Deschamps's design career. He is the third generation of Bertone's chief designers, and his decisions affect the future development of Bertone.

  • 1985 Volvo 780

Volvo780 is a two-door saloon entirely created by Bertone, from the formal design of the model to the full production cycle. In March 1985, Volvo Car Corporation showed the result of yet another cooperation in the field of luxury between Sweden and Italy, the Volvo 780.

The design of the 780 Series, the hood, trunk, and rooflines were just a bit lower than the standard 700 series profile. Other changes included the C-pillar being a bit wider and a more gradual slope down to the trunk. Compared to the 262C, the 780 Series featured more comfortable headroom. Chrome accented the window frames, which all had black matte trim. Chrome was also heavily used along the door handles, bumpers, and side moldings. Interior wise the center stack was an audio equalizer, and on the road, the rear suspension was self-leveling. Buyers could choose a turbo-four or V6 shared with Peugeot and Renault, which gave the Volvo 780 a French-like feel.The automaker advertised the 780 as 'not a sporty car but very comfortable, luxuriously appointed and loaded with all sorts of equipment and accessories as standard features.'

  • B Engineering Edonis

The B Engineering Edonis is a sports car developed in 2000 and manufactured by Italian automobile manufacturer B Engineering with overall engineering by Nicola Materazzi and styling by Deschamps. After Bugatti Automobili S.p.A. went bankrupt in 1995, a handful of ex-employees of the company formed a new company called B Engineering under the financing of Jean-Marc Borel, former Bugatti vice-Chairman and author of several Lamborghini books.The new company started to develop a new sports car under its name using the chassis of the Bugatti EB110 as a base.The B Engineering Edonis is based on the Bugatti EB110 Super Sport, sharing its carbon-fiber chassis with a redesigned interior and exterior. The engine also originates with the EB110 and is enlarged from 3.5 to 3.76 liters in displacement.Two prototypes were initially produced, one painted in metallic gold, presented in Modena and at other shows.In terms of design style, the B Engineering Edonis has a curved theme design instead of the original design language of its donor car. The fender-mounted headlights have ducts above them. An asymmetrical cooling duct between the headlights aids further in cooling the brakes. The vehicle has a wide rear end with large openings to cool the engine and integrated tail lights in the two side-mounted rear grilles. A small fixed rear wing helps generate downforce.

  • Scania truck 4-series

The Scania 4-series is a truck model range that Scania introduced in 1995. It was the successor of the 3-series, and it came in five engine combinations, three cabs, and four chassis types. The 4-series changed the well-known Scania front look from the square and lined to a new round and curved shape. The new cab design also split the grill horizontally in two, making the lower part flip down to make a step usable for better reach when cleaning windows or optionally as a bench while waiting somewhere.

Since the early 1970s, Scania's development in product style has shown us that everything is done logically, step by step, but it has constantly evolved towards a more promising development trend, which has also created a vivid and robust brand image for Scania. Scania's product is not about fashion: it establishes trends. Four systems in the implementation of the task, we must know the advantages and disadvantages of vehicles before: we must have a correct direction, introduce a new method to establish the design language, line, surface treatment, and avoid trying to do some strange things carefully, for Scania management requirements are expected to provide the best design. This is an excellent opportunity for Deschamps, one of the sucessful experiences in his career, and why the Scania 4 and 5 are rooted in a department of Scania bridge: the two projects do with one series (1980, 100% of Scania's first application of modular manufacturing truck series, P, R, G, T truck release) are closely linked. As early as 1987, Scania was looking for a clear but disruptive way to replace the original model of styling redesign, which was completely different from all previous suppliers and resulted in the classic Scania 4 Series."[4]

This is one of his representative works of different segment vehicle truck design, and his new Scania truck design is very successful and well-known. Modular is the most crucial character of this design project; the two series and three series cab design were too complicated, didn't have enough clean styling, and were probably too practical, and too bland. The modularization of the three main cab versions allows for a powerful appearance while at the same time carry over the same parts and reducing the cost of the truck significantly.

As Marc Deschamps recalls: "Evaluation and analysis of all the cabs before the fourth series was necessary for a designer to identify and understand the principal value of the product and finally prepare for the actual work, so combed the direction more specifically:

1. understanding and vision of Scania's values;

2. Modular constraints;

3. Aerodynamic requirements;

4. Cab space and improved ergonomic design;

5. Quality objectives;

6. Expected new styling direction;

7. Ensure the continuity of Scania's image.

JAC is a Chinese state-owned automobile and commercial vehicle manufacturer. The S350 is a mid-size city crossover SUV, Although the manufacturer has positioned it as a city SUV, the S350 in many ways goes far beyond that category. Deschamps was the chief designer of this SUV. The entire design was in a leading position in automotive industrial at that time. In term of this SUV design, Marc Deschamps adopted European designs of fashion, elegance, and nobility, while the tall body further ensured the SUV's entire gesture. In terms of the overall shape, this design has no excessive burden, and it shows the domineering and fashionable side of a modern rugged SUV cleanly in front of everyone. Elements such as "eagle eye" headlights, large areas of chrome-plated mesh, sliding back of the rear, and so on, have become the model's signature language. This is one of his representative works to enter the Chinese automotive design market.
