Early Life

Skelly was born to his namesake - Johnston Hastings Skelly, Sr. - and Elizabeth Finnefrock Skelly in 1841. The third of ten children, he and his siblings were raised in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and trained in their father's tailor shop as they grew older. As a child, he developed a close friendship with fellow Gettysburg youths Wesley Culp and Ginnie Wade.[1]

John Wesley Culp was a Confederate soldier during the American Civil War. A native of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and a brother of an officer in the Union Army, he served with the Confederate 2nd Virginia Infantry until he was killed in action near his hometown at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Early Life

John Wesley Culp - called by his middle name - was born in 1839 to Esaias Jesse Culp and Margaret Ann Sutherland Culp in York Springs in Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was raised in the county seat of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, which the Culp family had inhabited since 1787.
