The Arch-Hive, stylized as ARCH-HIVE is an artist collective in Utah founded by artists LAZERos and Camilla Stark. They are known for their art exhibitions and zine series that explore personal experiences with Mormon culture and beliefs.

Founding

LAZERos and Camilla Stark on founded the art collective in 2019.[1][2] They have hosted an artist roundtable on art collectives with the Springville Museum of Art.[3]

Zines

The HIVE zine series aims to "depict many perspectives & experiences with Mormonism through engaging, accessible art."[4] Volume one of the ARCH-HIVE's zine series was published in July 2018.[5] The zines include the use of the Deseret alphabet and digital collage.[5] They explore themes including Mormon ecology, horror, and folk magic.[5] Their eighth zine featured versions of the First Vision by untrained artists.[6]

Shows

The first HIVE show, in March 2019, was entitled "Holy Hell" and explored the intersections of the sacred and the profane.[7] Their second show, "Via Crucis" appeared in March 2020 and was themed around the traditional stations of the cross.[8] "Midwinter at the Gates of Dawn" appeared in December 2021.[9] In a review of the show at 15 Bytes, Jesslyn Low wrote that the strong and beautiful works "express themes and concepts that feel pertinent not only to the current climate of our communities but to the human journey as well."[10] The shows have featured art by J. Kirk Richards,[9] Lisa Delong,[9] Annie Poon,[8] and Matt Page,[8] among others.

Awards

The ARCH-HIVE won a special award in Literature and Art from the Association for Mormon Letters for their work in 2019. The award citation praised their zine series as "one more confident utterance of self-acceptance and determination in a larger revival of Mormon arts and letters" and called their art in its many forms a "reflection of the zeitgeist."[11]
