Seattle Information Technology Department (Seattle IT) is a municipal government agency in Seattle, Washington.

History[edit]

Prior to the formation of the Seattle Department of Information Technology, the city council, under the insistence of council member Tina Podlodowski, established the position of Seattle Chief Technology Officer. The position was first held by Edward Hatler, appointed on February 18th, 1997.[1][2] His tenure would be short-lived, where he was soon succeeded by Lynn Jacobs, who would take over the position on July 13th, 1998.[3]. Under her tenure, she successfully pushed for the creation of the Seattle Information Technology Department, which was formed in August 1999.[4][5] This, however, did not end the revolving door of CTO's. Jacobs departed in November of 1999. Marty Chakoian took her place, but he, too, left, retiring on July 5th, 2002.[6]

On October 22nd, 2003, Bill Schrier was appointed to the position of Chief Technology Officer of the Department of Information Technology by then mayor Greg Nickels. He had previously served as Director of Operations in the department since the formation of the department in 1999.[7]

Schrier left May 2nd, 2012, replaced by the Deputy Directory of IT, Erin Devoto.[8]

Devoto left March 28th, 2014, to take a job with the city of Kirkland.[9] Sabra Schneider, the city’s Director of Electronic Communications, replaced Devoto and became the interim CTO during the search for a replacement.[10]

Michael Mattmiller became the CTO on June 10th, 2014, after being appointed by mayor Ed Murray.[11] He quit to return to the private sector on January 19th, 2018, and was replaced by interm CTO Tracye Cantrell.[12]

Saad Bashir became the CTO on March 18th, 2019, replacing Cantrell who held the interim position for over a year. He was appointed by mayor Jenny Durkan.[13] On July 19th 2021, Jim Loter became interim CTO after the departure of Bashir.[14]
