Judy Ann Buffmire (June 5, 1929 – May 28, 2011)[1][2] was a Democratic member of the Utah State House of Representatives, representing the 35th District from 1993 to 2005.

Education

Buffmire graduated from Wasatch Academy in 1947. In 1966 she received her undergraduate degree from the University of Utah; she got her Masters degree in 1967 and her Ph.D. in Psychology in 1969.[2]

Political career

Buffmire was first elected in November 1992. She served as Assistant minority whip. In 2000, she sponsored legislation requiring insurers to offer mental health coverage. According to the American Psychological Association, Buffmire was (as of 2003) the only psychologist legislator to have served as president of a state psychological association.[3]

Professional and personal life

Buffmire was a psychologist. She was Director of the Rocky Mountain Regional Resource Center for Special Education at the University of Utah, and later an administrator in the Utah Department of Social Services. She helped create the Utah State Office of Rehabilitation, under the Utah State Board of Education, and was its first executive director. In her honor, the Judy Ann Buffmire Rehabilitation Service Center in Salt Lake City was dedicated on September 16, 1999.[2] Buffmire was president of the Utah Psychological Association from 1999-2000.
