The 1982 KB Cup was the name of the annual mid-week knockout rugby league competition. The naming rights sponsor changed to Tooth and Co.'s product KB Lager. The tournament was played from March to August 1982, culminating in the final between Sydney clubs Manly-Warringah and Newtown.

Format

The ninth midweek cup competition format ran like the 1981 Tooth Cup, however the 2 lowest performing teams after round 1 were eliminated. Each played 2 games with the top 8 teams advancing to the quarter finals.

The competition increased to 18 teams with 3 new teams being introduced. They were the 2 newly admitted teams to the Sydney premiership, Canberra and Illawarra along with South Island (NZ). South Island (NZ) won the New Zealand inter-district championship in 1981 and therefore replaced Central Districts (NZ) in the competition.

The competing teams were the 14 Sydney premiership teams (Balmain, Canberra, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cronulla-Sutherland, Eastern Suburbs, Illawarra, Manly-Warringah, Newtown, North Sydney, Parramatta, Penrith, St George, South Sydney and Western Suburbs), Combined Brisbane, NSW Country, QLD Country and South Island (NZ),
