  • January 2 - The Panama-owned MV Better Trans cargo ship sprang a leak and foundered in the Philippine Sea with the loss of one of her nineteen crew.[1]
  • January 7 - A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck 245 km (152 mi) south of Punta de Burica at a depth of 10.0 km (6.2 mi).[2]
