The 2016–17 Scottish Challenge Cup, known as the Petrofac Training Cup due to sponsorship reasons, will be the 26th season of the competition. 32 clubs will take part in the competition, which include the 30 members of the 2016–17 Scottish Championship, 2016–17 Scottish League One and 2016–17 Scottish League Two, the top 2015–16 Highland Football League club with a valid SFA club licence (Cove Rangers) and the highest placed team from the 2015–16 Lowland Football League with a valid SFA club licence (Edinburgh City).[citation needed]

The champions, Rangers, who defeated Peterhead in the 2016 final,[1] will not compete in the competition due to their promotion to the Scottish Premiership.[2]
