2016 Champion | Andy Murray |
Andy Murray was the defending champion, but did not qualify for the event this year.
Of the nine participants in 2016, only Marin Čilić, David Goffin, and Dominic Thiem are playing again this year (Stan Wawrinka qualified but withdrew due to injury).
The top two seeds are Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, neither of whom played in 2016. Nadal withdrew from the tournament after his first match.[1] Federer is participating in the ATP year-end championships for a record-extending 15th time.
Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov, Jack Sock and Pablo Carreño Busta (as an alternate replacing Nadal) made their debuts in the event. Goffin made his debut as a direct qualifier, after playing one match as an alternate in 2016.[2]
