Kopu is a settlement in on the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island. It is located near Thames, in the Thames-Coromandel District in the Waikato region.

Kopu is located on the Waihou River and features the Kopu Bridge.

The Totora-Kopu statistical area, as defined by Statistics New Zealand, covers a land area of 8.39 km².[1]

History

The estimated population of Totora-Kopu reached 600 in 1996, 640 in 2001, 710 in 2006, 810 in 2013, and 890 in 2018.[2]

Demography

Totora-Kopu has an estimated population of 960.

The population density was 107.28 people per km² in 2019.[3]

As of the 2018 census, the median age was 28.6, the median income was $29,300, 6.7% of people earned over $100,00, 14.8% had a Bachelor's Degree or higher, and 2.5% of the workforce was unemployed.[2]

Ethnically, the population was 84.4% New Zealand European, 19.0% Māori, 1.7% Pacific peoples, and 6.2% Asian; 15.9% were born overseas. Religiously, the population was 46.4% non-religious, 39.4% Christian and 1.4% Buddhist.[2]

Economy

In 2018, 13.9% of the workforce worked in manufacturing, 13.2% worked in construction, 9.0% worked in healthcare, 6.3% worked in hospitality, 6.3% worked in education, 3.5% worked in transport and 1.4% of the workforce worked in primary industries.[2]

Transportation

As of 2018, among those who commuted to work, 75.7% drove a car, 4.9% rode in a car, and 1.4% walked, ran or cycled.[2]
