The literal translation is not correct, as the derives from Cattimelibocus - a combination of tribal name Chatt and Melibokus, a Roman name for "mountains". The Jewish people were given the right to carry the name to show that the House von Katzenellenbogen was giving them protection. They were not however allowed to use the term "von".).
