Bubulcus is a genus of herons in the family Ardeidae.
The genus Bubulcus was introduced in 1855 by the French naturalist Charles Lucien Bonaparte with the western cattle egret as the type species.[1][2] The genus name is from Latin and means "cowherd".[3] The genus contains two species:[4]
Image | Name | Common name | Distribution |
---|---|---|---|
Bubulcus ibis | Western cattle egret | Southern Spain and Portugal, tropical and subtropical Africa and humid tropical and subtropical Asia and tropical and subtropical America | |
Bubulcus coromandus | Eastern cattle egret | southern and eastern Asia, and Australasia |
Some taxonomic authorities lump both species together, calling them cattle egrets, and making the genus monotypic.[5][6][7]
