Bubulcus is a genus of herons in the family Ardeidae.

The genus Bubulcus was introduced in 1855 by the French naturalist Charles Lucien Bonaparte with the western cattle egret as the type species.[1][2] The genus name is from Latin and means "cowherd".[3] The genus contains two species:[4]

Image Name Common name Distribution
Bubulcus ibis Western cattle egret Southern Spain and Portugal, tropical and subtropical Africa and humid tropical and subtropical Asia and tropical and subtropical America
Bubulcus coromandus Eastern cattle egret southern and eastern Asia, and Australasia

Some taxonomic authorities lump both species together, calling them cattle egrets, and making the genus monotypic.[5][6][7]
