The Haneda Hai (羽田盃, "Haneda Cup") is a Japanese thoroughbred horse race on dirt track only for three years old. It is run over a distance of 1,800 meters (about 9 furlongs) at Oi Racecourse in Shinagawa, Tokyo in April or May. This race is graded as South Kanto (Minami-Kanto) grade 1 (S1) just like the Tokyo Derby. This is the first leg of triple crown race of Minami-Kanto horseracing.
It began in 1955 as the Oi Hai. Its name was changed to Haneda Hai in commemoration of Haneda racecourse which used to be situated next to Shinagawa.[1]
Its distance has been changed several times. It has been run as follows:
- from its inception until 1966 at 1800 meters
- from 1967 to 1995 at 2000 meters
- from 1996 to 1998 at 1800 meters
- from 1999 to 2001 at 1600 meters
- from 2002 to 2003 at 1790 meters
- from 2004 onwards at 1800 meters
Horses belonging to Minami-Kanto Horseracing can run.[2]
Announced on June 20, 2022, it will become the first leg of the Japanese Triple Crown of Dirt in 2024 onwards along with Tokyo Derby and Japan Dirt Derby (renamed Japan Dirt Classic). It will be upgraded to Jpn1 (Domestic G1), Geldings will no longer be able to enter, maximum 4 JRA horses will be able to enter, and prize money for first place will be increased to ¥ 50,000,000.
