Tarbagatay (Template:Lang-kk, Tarbağatai audany) is a district of the East Kazakhstan and Abai regions in eastern Kazakhstan. The administrative center of the district is the selo of Aksuat. Population: 44,147 (2013 estimate);[2] 47,125 (2009 Census results);[3] 65,589 (1999 Census results).[3]

Climate

Very continental. Winter is cold (in January average temperature −22 °С, −30 °С) and summer is hot (in July average temperature +25 °С, +35 °С). Very poor precipitation (200–300 mm/year) mostly in winter season[4]

Toponym

The name Tarbagatay derives from Mongolian (Tarbagan marmot) as marmot mountains. (Technically, tarbagatay means "with marmots" or "having marmots" in Mongolian, but tagh ~ taw ~ tay may be misinterpreted as meaning "mountain" by speakers of Turkic languages, such as the Kazakh language.)
