Peirópolis
Peirópolis is a rural district located in Uberaba, Brazil. The site is known for its significant paleontological discoveries, particularly the abundant fossil deposits dating back to the Late Cretaceous period. These fossils were first uncovered in the mid-1940s during infrastructure-related activities in the vicinity.
The area is home to the Paleontological Research Center Llewellyn Ivor Price, which is dedicated to the study of fossils and paleontology, in honor of the contributions made by the Brazilian paleontologist Llewellyn Price. Adjacent to the research center, visitors can explore the Dinosaur Museum of Peirópolis, which exhibits an extensive collection of dinosaur fossils that have been unearthed in the surrounding area.[1]
Since its establishment in 1992, The Paleontological Research Center has garnered recognition as a leading institution for paleontological investigations in Brazil.[2] Through collaborative efforts with various organizations, the center has contributed to the scientific discourse through the publication of scholarly articles.[3] The Dinosaur Museum's collection primarily represents the Late Cretaceous era, providing an exhibition on the geology and paleontology of the Uberaba region, and housing a diverse assemblage of 1,500 fossils.[4]
Notable discoveries in the area include significant extinct species such as Peirosaurus, Uberabatitan, and Uberabasuchus.[5]
In the early 20th century, Peirópolis also served as a limestone producer in the Uberaba region.[6]
