Mai Sakurajima (桜島 麻衣, Sakurajima Mai) is a character from the Japanese light novel and anime series Rascal Does Not Dream. She is the main female focal character of the first light novel Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. Mai is a young actress who decides to take a hiatus due to the pressures of her acting work and her abusive mother, who was previously her manager. While on hiatus, she realizes people are unable to detect her existence. She then wears a bunny girl outfit at the library to test if people will notice her. She meets the male protagonist, Sakuta Azusagawa, who agrees to help figure out what's happening while she continues to get closer to him. Sakuta restores Mai's existence and everyone's memories of her when he declares his love to Mai in front of the entire school; then, they become a couple.

Character and reception

A notable model and actress, she is an attractive third-year high school girl. She's very kind-hearted, nice, serious, and polite with a tendency to freak out around Sakuta given his lewd remarks. She's also sensitive about what others think of her, and anxious about the possibility of being forgotten, though Sakuta helps her overcome it.[1] She is pure-hearted yet also has a more playful and funny side to her personality,[2] and is also confident and strong-willed.[3] Like Sakuta and Shoko, she's also a very selfless and loving person, which is particularly notable given she's the one who sacrifices her life in the movie.[4]

Her approachable personality has been appreciated and compared to more abrasive light novel heroines such as Yukino Yukinoshita.[5] CBR.com ranks Mai #28 among the best waifu of all time.[6] Since the release of the work, Mai has always been a popular and well-liked character on sites such as MyAnimeList.[7]
