Events

1 March – New Zealand children's television show produced in Dunedin Squirt debuts on TV3. It later moved to TV2 in 1999.
15 July – New Zealand soap opera City Life premieres on TV2.
TV One adopted new sans serif logo, replacing the Friz Quadranta has been in use since 1987.
The 1996 Summer Olympics were held in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, where New Zealand won 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal.
