The main building of Warsaw University (Rostov-on-don) is a building in Rostov-on-Don, which was built in 1912-1914 by the project of architect I. E. Cherkessian .It is located at the corner of Bolshaya Sadovaya street and Ostrovsky lane. Currently, it is one of the buildings of the Southern Federal University.[1] The building was built of art Nouveau style and has the status of a cultural heritage site of the regional significance.

History

At the beginning of the 20th century in the area of crossing of Postal lane (now Ostrovsky lane) and Bolshaya Sadovaya street there were factory buildings there and the plant of the merchant of the 1st Guild N. I. Churilina. In 1912, the city Council decided to build a profitable house here. A competition was held, in which the first place was taken by the project of the student of the Institute of civil engineers I. E. Cherkessian (Cherkesov). The second and the third places were taken respectively by the projects of the Kiev engineer I. G. Starov and the architect from Rostov G. N. Vasilyeva. The Cherkessian project was approved with some changes. In the same year, construction began, and in 1914 the city profitable house was opened.

In 1915, German troops were approaching Warsaw, and then it was decided to evacuate the University of Warsaw to Rostov-on-don. The former city's profitable house became the main building of the University. There were historical-philological, physical-mathematical, law and medical faculties, various scientific societies, laboratories and clinics. In 1917, the University was named as Don University. In the mid-1930s, the main building of the Rostov University moved to the former profitable house of Kistov. And the Rostov pedagogical Institute was located in the profitable house.

In 1993 the Pedagogical Institute became a University. In 2006, it was included in the Southern Federal University.
