Onekawa is a suburb of the city of Napier, in the Hawke's Bay Region of the eastern North Island of New Zealand.

The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "salty soil" for Onekawa.[1]

Onekawa Central had a population of 1,320 at the 2013 New Zealand census, an increase of 72 people since the 2006 census. There were 612 males and 705 females. Figures have been rounded and may not add up to totals.[2] 87.6% were European/Pākehā, 16.2% were Māori, 1.9% were Pacific peoples and 2.8% were Asian.[3]

Onekawa houses a high proportion of industry trade businesses.

Marae

The local Pukemokimoki marae is a marae (meeting ground) for the iwi (tribe) of Ngāti Kahungunu and its hapū (sub-tribe) of Ngā Hau E Whā, and includes the wharenui (meeting house) of Omio.[4][5]

Education

Onekawa School is co-educational state primary school,[6] with a roll of 331 as of February 2024.[7][8]

Henry Hill School is co-educational state primary school,[9][10] with a roll of as of February 2024.[7][11]

St Patrick's School is co-educational state primary school,[12][13] with a roll of 291 as of February 2024.[7][14]

William Colenso College is co-educational state primary school,[15][16] with a roll of 314 as of February 2024.[7][17] Hawke's Bay School for Teenage Parents is teenage parenting facility within the college.[15][18][19]

Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Ara Hou is co-educational Kura Kaupapa Māori immersion school,[20] with a roll of 236 as of February 2024.[7][21]
