Luis Carrión Cruz (born 1952 or 1953) is Nicaraguan politician. He is a former guerilla and one of the nine commandantes of the Sandinista (FSLN) government following the 1979 overthrow of the Somoza regime.[1]

Early life

Carrión grew up in a wealthy family in Nicaragua.[1] He is the nephew of Arturo Cruz and the cousin of Arturo Cruz, Jr., both of whom served as Nicaraguan political officials and diplomats.[1] As a child, he was an excellent student, named top sixth-grader in the country in 1964, and eventually becoming valedictorian at his Catholic high school in Managua.[1] Following his graduation, he spent one year at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, where he was on the honor roll, and then matriculated at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.[1] However he then left college to return to Nicaragua.[1]
