February
- Baumes-les-Dames earthquake on 23 February 2004, magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Baume-les-Dames in a department of Doubs.[2] Dept of 10 km.
July
- A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Doğubayazıt, Turkey on July 2 at a depth of 5 km (3.1 mi).
October
- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck near Taiwan on October 15 mid-day local time at a depth of 94.4 km (58.7 mi). The epicenter was located 85 km (53 mi) East of Su-ao, and 130 km (81 mi) southeast of Taipei, Taiwan. The quake was felt in the Ryukyu Islands as well as in Taiwan.
November
- A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Alor Island, Indonesia on November 11, at a depth of only 10 km (6.2 mi). Thousands of casualties were reported, including 23 deaths.
December
- A magnitude 9.2 earthquake struck Sumatra, Indonesia on December 26, causing a destructive tsunami which killed at least 227,898 people, making it the deadliest tsunami ever recorded. The waves reached as far as Africa.
