Neufeld is a surname of German origin, meaning "new field". It is not seldom in Germany and it is common among German speaking Mennonites from Russia.

It first registered among religious Mennonite Christians in the Danzig region, in late 17th century. The "new-fielders" (Neufeld, Neufeldt, etc.) were a people skilled in building drainage and dam systems, to reclaim land from marshes and the low lands, by the seas of northern Europe – e.g. Holland, Vistula Delta, etc. It is said that some of them may have had Dutch names, similar in origin, from the Frisian province/region.
