It served with 1ACC and was deployed to Episkopi Garrison in Cyprus in 1991 as part of Operation Granby to cover for the T84 radar on Mt Olympus which was awaiting a turntable replacement. I worked as a maintenance engineer on the radar during this time and it was due to be deployed to the Gulf but this didn't happen as the waveguide compressor burned out du...). The AN/TPS-44 is a transportable 2-dimensional air search radar produced in the United States originally by Cardion Electronics.

Description

The AN/TPS-44 is a ground-based, non-fixed (i.e.: transportable) search radar.[n 1] [1]

The main components of the system are a shelter (where the crew operates it) and the foldable antenna. These components are the two loads into which the system can be broken down, and packed into two M35 trucks for road transport, or airlifted via helicopter or cargo plane.[2]

Operational history

The AN/TPS-44 completed development in the early 1960s and entered US Air Force service in the late 1960s during the Vietnam War. It is still in service with the United States and other countries, including Argentina.[citation needed]

This radar was deployed by the Argentine Army during the 1982 Falklands War, both in the mainland and at Port Stanley in the islands. The set installed at Stanley was used to guide Argentine air attacks on the British fleet.[3]
