PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital[1] is a not-for-profit hospital located in Los Angeles and was founded in 1885, moving to its current location in 1911. The hospital contains seven “Centers of Excellence” that focus on advancing medicine while providing patient care with nationally and internationally acclaimed physicians. It also offers a broad range of clinical services, is a lead research facility, and strives to give the best necessary care to patients. In 2019 the hospital joined the PIH Health network. [2]

About PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital

PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital[3] [4]is a medical center associated with the Keck School of Medicine of USC and was founded in 1885. It contains seven “Centers of Excellence” that focus on advancing medicine while providing patient care with nationally and internationally acclaimed physicians and doctors. These centers include the Heart & Vascular Center, Comprehensive Orthopaedic Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, Tertiary Retinal Surgery, Pancreatico-Biliary Program, Transfusion-Free Medicine & Surgery Center, and the Davajan-Cabal Center for Perinatal Medicine. Each year, the hospital admits around 12,500 patients and takes more than 74,000 outpatient visits. More than 2,500 deliveries and 6,000 surgeries are performed annually in their 32 surgical suites. PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital has 408 beds, 32 surgical suites, and 625 staff members.[5]

The hospital completed its 193,000-square-foot (17,900 m2) Medical Pavilion in 2018. The medical pavilion has features such as radiation oncology, a pharmacy, Women’s Imaging, and a Bistro Café on the first floor. The second floor includes 8 outpatient surgery suites and floors 3 to 7 house physician offices and other services. The Medical Pavilion is a facility designed to enhance the efficiency of patient service and research.[5] PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital also supports educational programs for physicians, nurses, other health professionals, patients and the general public.[6] The hospital has been integrated in the Los Angeles community for over 130 years. Since that time, the Los Angeles hospital has maintained a tradition of caring, and every staff member is “proud and passionate about caring for every individual patient.”[7] In 2019 the hospital joined the PIH Health network becoming the third hospital in the organization which includes PIH Health Hospital-Whittier and PIH Health Hospital-Downey.[8]

Centers of Excellence and Clinical Services

Good Samaritan Hospital's Centers of Excellence programs focus on advancing medicine while pioneering new protocols to improve patient care. Many of these centers are considered among the best programs in the United States. Others show international recognition. In each center, medical leadership is provided by physicians who are acclaimed by their peers and patients. Patients receive up-to-date medical care, in these facilities.[10] Good Samaritan Hospital also offers a range of clinical services.

Historical Milestones[11]

1885 - Sister Mary Wood establishes a nine-bed facility in Los Angeles.

1886 - St. Paul's Episcopal Church entered into an agreement to assume control of the facility, renamed The Los Angeles Hospital and Home for Invalids.

1886 - A good samaritan, Mrs. Mark Severance, donates funds to purchase new property for larger quarters. The hospital is renamed in her honor. The hospital begins an era of growth, mirroring the growth of Los Angeles.

1898 - Good Samaritan becomes a school for nurses - still used today by the hospital's on-site training programs and continued emphasis on nurse-patient education.

1911 - Good Samaritan moves to its current location.

1927 - New facilities are developed to better serve the growing Los Angeles community.

1953 - A major addition is built. The hospital is designed for 400+ patients.

1976 - Ten years of planning culminate in a new hospital, upgraded to include the most recent technologies and newest concepts.

1981 - A medical office building is added.

1984 - An outpatient surgery center is established.

1986 - The Heart Institute is founded as a Center of Excellence.

1986 - Good Samaritan makes history with the world's first live birth from a frozen embryo. The Institute for Reproductive Research is founded.

1989 - The Davajan-Cabal Perinatal Center, affiliated with the USC School of Medicine, is created as a Center of Excellence to meet increased demand for childbirth services.

1990 - Spacious cardiothoracic surgery and intensive care wings are added.

1991 - The Orthopaedic Institute is developed as a Center of Excellence.

1992 - The Kidney Stone Center is developed as a Center of Excellence.

1998 - Good Samaritan Hospital is named one of "America's Best Hospitals" for "Top Medical Care in 16 Specialties" by U.S. News & World Report.

1999 - The Transfusion-Free Medicine and Bloodless Surgery program is developed and offered to patients.

1999 - The Bone & Joint Institute is developed.

2019- Joins the PIH Health network which included a name change to PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital.[12]

Actress Jean Harlow died of kidney disease at this hospital at age 26 at 11:37 AM on June 7, 1937.
