Henry Charles Gage, 5th Viscount Gage (2 April 1854 – 18 April 1912) was a British aristocrat. He inherited the title Viscount Gage in 1877 (along with the family seat Firle Place, Sussex) from his grandfather.

His grandparents had extensive roots in British North America as descendants from the Schuyler family, the Delancey family, and the Van Cortlandt family.

He was engaged to the musician, Violet Gordon-Woodhouse, but she broke it off when human sexuality was explained to her.[1] He married Leila Peel in 1894.

He commissioned major alterations and renovations of Firle Place by Billy Freeman Thomas. Gage had a new staircase and garden terraces installed at the manor for his wife to entertain nobility and royalty.

Family

He was the son of Hon. Henry Edward Hall Gage (9 January 1814 – 8 September 1875), and Sophia Selena Knightley. He married Leila Georgina Peel; they had four children:

  • Henry Gage, 6th Viscount Gage (30 December 1895 – 27 February 1982)
  • Hon. Irene Adelaide Gage (born 9 February 1898)
  • Hon. Vera Benedicta Gage (born 29 April 1899)
  • Hon. Yvonne Rosamund Gage (20 July 1902 – 3 February 1960) [2]
