The 1989–90 Illinois State Redbirds men's basketball team represented Illinois State University as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) during the 1989-90 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by head coach Bob Bender, and played their home games in the brand new Redbird Arena (first full season). After finishing tied for second in the regular season MVC standings, the Redbirds won the MVC Tournament, for the first time in school history, to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Illinois State lost to defending champion Michigan in the opening round, 76–70, to finish with a record of 18-13 (9-5 MVC).
