Biography
Apleni matriculated and soon achieved a diploma in paralegal studies. He joined the EFF after its inception and was appointed the party's provincial secretary in the Eastern Cape in 2015.[1] In the 2016 South African municipal elections, Apleni was elected to the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality centred around the provincial capital of Bhisho and the city of East London as one of the EFF's proportional representation councillors.[2] The first few months of Apleni's councillor term were marked by the ejection of the EFF caucus from council over a dress code dispute.[3][4]
In October 2018, Apleni was elected the EFF's deputy provincial chairperson.[5] On 23 May 2019, Apleni became a member of the National Council of Provinces representing the Eastern Cape. He is one of nine EFF representatives in the legislature.[6] He is a member of the Select Committee on Trade and Industry, Economic Development, Small Business Development, Tourism, Employment and Labour and an alternate member of both the Select Committee on Health Social and Services and the Select Committee on Education and Technology, Sports, Arts and Culture.
