Filippo Emanuele, Prince of Piedmont was the son of Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy and Infanta Catherine Michelle of Spain and was the heir apparent to the Duchy of Savoy until his death in 1605.

Early years

Filippo Emanuele's parents Catalina Micaela and Charles Emmanuel were married in Zaragoza in 1585 Catherine conceived quickly and gave birth to Filippo on 2 April 1586 and his brother Victor Amadeus I, Duke of Savoy on 8 May 1587. That same year Filippo and his brother Victor were baptized in Turin and before them and the people of Savoy was displayed the Holy shroud which was sacred to the people of Savoy. Catalina Micaela then gave birth to many of Filippo's other siblings such as Emanuele Filiberto in 1588, Margherita (1589-1655), Isabella (1591-1626), Maurizio (1593-1657), Maria Apollonia in 1594, Francesca Caterina in 1595, Tommaso Francesco (1596-1656), and in 1597, Giovanna, whose birth caused the death of his mother. He was educated in Turin at his parents' court in his early years.

Arrival in Spain

After the signing of the Treaty of Lyon in 1601 by his father, with the King of France,his first aims were to improve his relations with his brother-in-law Felipe III of Spain, as well as completing the education of his eldest sons,he sends the boys to the Spanish court. The prince along with his brothers the princes Víctor Amadeo and Emanuele Filiberto accompanied by his entourage (including Carlos Filiberto de Este and Giovanni Botero) arrived in Valladolid, where the court was established at the time, at the end of August 1603. In the month of October, their uncle the king gives each of them their own house.

Death

He died in Valladolid on February 9, 1605, as a result of smallpox which was common at the time, as a result of his death his brother Vittorio Amedeo became heir apparent and was styled as Prince of Pidemont and became Duke later on,his brother kept his fathers treaty with the king of France and married Princess Christine of France as a part of the alliance .
