Karabakh is a geographic region in the south of Armenia and the west of Azerbaijan.

Spelling

Although "Karabakh" is the most common spelling of the name in English, there are many ways to spell it:

  • Gharabagh (transliteration of the Armenian spelling)
  • Qarabagh, Qarabağ, Qarah Bagh (transliterations of the Azerbaijani spelling)

  • Nagorno-Karabakh, meaning "Mountainous Karabakh." Although Karabakh refers to the whole of Karabakh, due to the prominence of the mountainous region in the contemporary politics of the region, it is often synonymous with just the mountainous area.
  • Karabakh Steppe, or Lowland Karabakh (see Karabakh)
  • Zangezur, the western highlands of Karabakh, the only part of Karabakh which lies within Armenia, roughly corresponding to the Province of Syunik.
