Gati is an Indian multinational courier delivery services company headquartered in Hyderabad, India.[2][3][4] It is known for supply chain solutions with express distribution and also offers warehousing, freight forwarding, trading, cold chain, e-commerce and fulfilment services. Gati has offices in all major cities of India, with presence in Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Nepal and Thailand.[5]
Gati was founded in 1989 by Mahendra Agarwal and first started their operations between Madras and Madurai.[6] It is listed on the National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange.
History
Early history
Gati began in 1989 and started providing same-day courier and distribution services and courier management solutions between Madras and Madurai. The company expanded to Hyderabad, Bangalore, Madras and Hosur within the same year.[7]
It became the first company in India to start providing the delivery date on the docket and started offering a money back guarantee.[8] The company was incorporated in 1995 as Gati Corporation Ltd.
1996–2000: Making alliances
In 1996, Gati partnered with Indian Airlines and started a new express service to its client base in order to improve the delivery time and cost-efficiency.[9] By the next year, they started a third party logistics and supply chain management solutions.[10] In 1999, the company made its international presence and tied with Bhutan and Maldives Postal department to enter the International Cargo Segment.[11] Next year, the company rebranded itself from Gati Corporation to Gati Ltd.
2001–2008: Growth and expansion
In 2001, Gati became the first logistics company in India to launch hi-tech and high speed cargo train between Mumbai and Kolkata in association with Indian Railway. Gati expanded its reach and commenced Gati Millennium Parcel Express between Mumbai and New Delhi. At the same time, it also ventured into Cold Chain Logistics.[12][13]
From 2003 to 2005, Gati added several new services including WorldWide Saver, a bulk mailing service; Gati Gold and Gati Silver services, for speedy air-delivery; and Gati Saver, small package segment.[14] During this time, the company started working on building express distribution centers during the major cities of the country.
In 2005, the company set up offices at Beijing to create a gateway for the growing business between India and China, it set up an India-centric express distribution, warehousing and inventory management system.
In 2007, the company signed a MoU with China Railway Express International Logistics Company for rail and road cargo package delivery between India and China.[15][16] Later in the year, it started their operations in the Singapore and created warehouse in the Changi Air Cargo Complex. Gati planned, but later abandoned, a joint service with Gati packages on board, and then Gati would have flown the packages subsonically to their delivery points. To manage its growing business, it opened a Mega Mechantronic Express Distribution Centre in Bangalore.[17]
Gati incorporated new companies, Gati Skyways Ltd, Gati Japan and Gati Import Export Trading Ltd as its subsidiaries to make the core services more accountable. It acquired the majority of equity shares in Clearing House company, Zen Cargo Movers Pvt. Ltd to further expand its services.[18] It signed a strategic sales agreement with General Logistics System to enter the European Market. It also launched Vehicle Tracking System, a centralized computer system to manage people, packages and vehicles in real time and created a centralized call center in Nagpur.[19]
2009–2012
Gati signed a joint venture agreement with Kintetsu world express for their express distribution and supply chain business to form Gati – KWE, which remained as a subsidiary of Gati.[20] The following year the company introduced its e commerce logistics services to compete with the other logistics companies in India by offering logistics capabilities to sellers, warehouses, fulfillment centers for all leading marketplaces.[21]
2013–2017
In 2017, Gati expanded its cold chain vertical through warehouses across India. It launched Gati Fulfillment Services (GFS) to focus on the growing e-commerce industry and established fulfillment centers across all major cities in India.[22] It also launched point to point transportation services for bulk movement of goods in dedicated vehicles and pre designated routes by the name of M-VATS. Gati also invested in Browntape, a multi-channel e-commerce automation and technology company.[23]

Operational units and services
Gati is organized into operating units, each of these units has specialized services.
- Express Distribution- Gati offers express distribution services. Each service specific to different customer needs which varies from type of products shipped to the mode of transport used and timeline for deliveries.
- Warehousing Solutions- It includes warehousing services for e-commerce, Hospitality, Healthcare and other industries.
- Cold Chain Solutions- It is a cold chain distribution division of Gati, running under Gati Kausar, to provide climate-control logistics solutions.
- Freight Forwarding- This cover services across APAC, SAARC and also in India or vice versa by moving goods through Gati international which includes all the business solutions.
- Fulfilment Services- Gati fulfillment centers provides warehousing and order-fulfillment for third-party seller. Third-party sellers can use Fulfillment by Gati to sell on e-commerce platforms.
- E-commerce Logistics- Gati has set up e-commerce logistics services which include pickup and reverse pickup services with reach across India.
- Trading Solutions- Gati Trading Solutions - GIETL, provides import/export services, end-to-end logistics, online trading services, inventory management, demand planning & forecasting solutions, handling entire purchase order management function of any type of business.
GATI-KWE
Gati and Japan's Kintetsu World Express entered into a joint venture to provide express distribution and supply chain solutions in India. Gati-Kintetsu Express Pvt Ltd was formed where Gati remained the major stock holder with 70 per cent stake and remaining 30 per cent was with Kintetsu World Express.[26]
Gaticonnect
Gati under its expansion program launched Gaticonnect.com, an online marketplace where specialties from all corners of India will be available. They partnered with small and big vendors across India and created express distribution to handle the logistics of the online store.[27]
CSR
The company under its corporate social responsibility program has created several social programs, including Rally For Rivers, an initiative to save our rivers; Golf for Wildlife and Nature tournament;[28] opened Gati Government High School, Hyderabad, Telangana & Gati Mudaliar Chettiar Middle School, Nagore, Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu; Gati Muskan; adopted Tiger in a Zoo and others.[29]
