The journal publishes a wide variety of topics in neuroinformatics and is the oldest journal in the field, with an emphasis on data structure and software tools related to analysis, modeling, integration, and sharing in all areas of neuroscience research. The journal often publishes open-source software tools and their evaluation and is indexed in a wide range of bibliographic databases, e.g., PubMed.

As of 2019, the journal has a 5 year impact factor of 5.006, [1] and Google Scholar reported its h5-index to be 25. [2]

It has 2 Editors-in-Chief: Giorgio A. Ascoli and Erik De Schutter.

The journal currently has a hybrid open access publishing model in comparison with its competing journal Frontiers in Neuroinformatics published by Frontiers Media, that is fully open access.
