El Capitan is the second highest peak in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana, part of the larger Bitterroot Range that runs along the border of Montana and Idaho. The highest point of the Bitterroot Mountains is nearby Trapper Peak.
The peak is located in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in the Bitterroot National Forest.
