A local health board (LHB) is an administrative unit within NHS Wales.

LHBs were first established in Wales in 2003.[1] [2] They were 22 in number, being coterminous with the 22 Welsh local authorities.[3] The LHBs planned what health services their populations needed and then paid hospital NHS trusts, family doctors, dentists and others to provide these services.

The NHS in Wales underwent a major reorganisation in 2009, merging the 22 Local Health Boards with the seven NHS trusts providing hospital services into seven larger local health boards.[4]

Alongside the seven local health boards there are three all-Wales NHS trusts within NHS Wales (Public Health Wales, Velindre University NHS Trust and the Welsh Ambulance Service)[5] and one Special Health Authority (Health Education and Improvement Wales).[6]
