D3T Ltd is a British video game developer based in Runcorn. The studio primarily works on remastering and porting old video game titles to modern consoles.[1] The company has faced criticism for some of its projects, from both fanatics, industry experts and gaming critics alike.[2]

History

The company was formed by Jamie Campbell and Stephen Powell in 2011. The studio was sold to Keywords Studios in 2017 for £3 million. The label employs around 100 people.[3]

Controversies

Shenmue and Shenmue II (2018)

The studio ported the 1999 and 2001 games, originally by Sega, to modern consoles in 2018. These ports featured numerous glitches and bugs which do not appear in the original, so much so that original developer, Eigo Kasahara, criticised d3t Limited, and is quoted saying, “as a developer on the original games, the last thing I wanted for the re-release is for them to be worse than the originals".[4]

Mafia II: Definitive Edition (2020)

The company remastered 2010 2K Czech game, Mafia II, to modern consoles in May 2020 as Mafia II: Definitive Edition. The release was panned by fanatics and critics alike, mainly due to the glitches and bugs which do not appear in the 2010 original.[5] At launch, the game suffered glitches including the player character falling through the map, invisible walls, and frame rate issues.[6] A patch was released later on in 2020, however, as of October 2020, many glitches are still apparent, such as characters' eyes not being animated correctly and character models becoming glitched.[7]
