Shergarh Fort (also known as Qila Shergarh, Bhurkuda Fort) is a ruined Fort in Sasaram (12 km from Chenari) of Bihar.[1][2] It is a hill fort on a Plateau about 800 feet in height and was fortified by Emperor Sher Shah Suri.[3] The fort is in dense forest which makes access difficult for people who are at the bottom of the plateau. The plateau lies at the bank of the Durgavati River.[4]
History
The fort was built between 1540 to 1545 by Emperor Sher Shah Suri.[5] In the 16th century the fort was known as Bhurkuda Qila.[6] It is also claimed that the fort had been built by Kharwar rulers and subsequently was captured by Sher Shah Suri in 1530.[citation needed]
Architecture
The area of the fort is nearly 16 km2. Its main entrance originally had eight small domes but now there are only five. One kilometre from the main entrance is a lake which is called Rani Pokhra (Queen's pond), and located at an adjacent hill there is an underground fort.[7]
