World No. 1 Serena Williams was the three-time defending champion, but she withdrew from the tournament due to injury.

Garbiñe Muguruza, Flavia Pennetta and Lucie Šafářová made their debuts at the event.

Agnieszka Radwańska won the title, defeating Petra Kvitová in the final, 6–2, 4–6, 6–3.

For the first time since the current Round Robin format was reintroduced in 2003, both finalists advance to the final after losing two matches in the round-robin stage.
