Alexander was a ship-rigged merchant vessel launched in 1807. She sailed on routes that connected Ceylon and India with the United Kingdom. It was on one of these journeys that she was wrecked on Cole House Point on the River Thames on 9 August 1828.

Design

Alexander was a two deck full-rigged ship with a wooden hull sheathed in copper over board constructed at Bideford in 1807.[1] She is reported as having a burthen of 446, 447 and 449 tons.[2][3][4]

Career

Alexander is listed in the Lloyds Register in 1818 as vessel in excellent (A.I) operated by J Surflen.[2] She operated between England, Ireland and France. By 1820, she had deteriorated to E.I condition, and was carrying cargo between England and India.[1] By 1827, the ship was being operated by Richardson on a route to Ceylon.[5]

Loss

On 6 April 1828 she sailed from Colombo, Ceylon, calling at Mauritius on 2 May, and arriving in London on 6 August.[6] The following day, she was driven ashore and was wrecked at Cole House Point near Gravesend on the River Thames.[7] The cargo was lost.[8]
