Abies alba from Koehler (1887)

Abietaceae Bercht. & J.Presl is a botanical name for a family of conifers. In some systems, such as the Wettstein system, this name was used for what now is the Pinaceae. The latter name has priority and is therefore the correct name.

If the Pinaceae were to be split into two or more families with the subfamily Abietoideae raised to the rank of family, the name Abietaceae would be correct for that family. This name is thus available for a family that would include the genus Abies, but exclude the genus Pinus.
