He was the son of a Ukrainian clergyman. He was educated at St. Michael's School of Art (1878) and then attended the Nicholas General Staff Academy (1883).

From 30 August 1915 to 21 November 1917, he was commander of the 4th Army.

In 1918, he became Minister of Defense of the Ukrainian State under Pavlo Skoropadskyi.
After forces under Nikifor Grigoriev had taken Odessa, he was shot by the Bolsheviks on 29 June 1919, after refusing to join the Red Army.
