Alexandr (Alex) Pavlovich Rasnitsyn (Russian: Александр Павлович Расницын) (born 24 September 1936 in Moscow) is one of the world's leading experts in palaeoentomology. His scientific interests are centered on the palaeontology, phylogeny, and taxonomy of the hymenopteran insects and of the insects in general. He has also studied broader biological problems such as evolutionary theory and the principles of phylogenetics, taxonomy, and nomenclature. He has published some 250 articles and books, in several languages. In August 2008 he was awarded the Distinguish Research Medal of the International Society of Hymenopterists, a richly deserved recognition for his decades of research on the evolution of the order Hymenoptera.
