Allison is a city in and the county seat of Butler County, Iowa, United States.Template:GR The population was 1,006 at the 2000 census. Allison is home to the Butler County Fair.[1] The city was named for U.S. Senator William Boyd Allison in 1881.[2]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.0 square miles (7.6 km²), all of it land.

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 1,006 people, 424 households, and 267 families residing in the city. The population density was 341.2 people per square mile (131.7/km²). There were 454 housing units at an average density of 154.0/sq mi (59.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.50% White, 0.10% from other races, and 0.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.30% of the population.

There were 424 households out of which 25.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% were non-families. 33.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.81.

In the city the population was spread out with 20.8% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 21.7% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 30.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 85.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,338, and the median income for a family was $42,050. Males had a median income of $30,147 versus $18,929 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,472. About 5.8% of families and 8.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 11.4% of those age 65 or over.
