Andrii Borysovych Pilshchykov (Ukrainian: Андрій Борисович Пільщиков, died August 25, 2023 near Zhytomyr Oblast)[1][2] was a prominent fighter pilot with the call sign "Juice", a captain in the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade[5] of the Ukrainian Air Force.[3][4] He flew Mikoyan MiG-29s during Russian invasion of Ukraine.[6]

Biography

In 2018, the pilot took part in the international exercise "Clear Sky 2018". At that time, his American friends gave him the call sign "Juice" because he would not drink alcoholic beverages. For some time, he was the only pilot of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with an official call sign.[4]

Since the beginning of the large-scale Russian invasion, he has been defending Ukraine's skies. He participated in the air defense of Kyiv and other territories.[4] Since March 2022 Juice gave several live interviews to CNN between sorties, without disclosing his real name, while wearing a helmet or a bandana over his mouth.[7][8]

As of 7 May 2022, Juice had 500 hours of combat flight time.[9]

He died in the evening of 25 August 2023 along with two other pilots, when two L-39 training planes collided near Zhytomyr Oblast.[1][2] Juice's death was widely covered in Ukrainain media, which published full archive photographs where his face can be seen.[5]

Advocacy efforts

Juice was mentioned as an authoritative reference on challenges faced by Ukrainian Air Force[10][11] and the need to supply F-16 fighters to Ukraine.[12] In interviews with The Washington Post,[13] Financial Times,[14] CNN,[11][15] Fox News,[16] BBC News,[6] he called on Western partners to provide Ukraine with modern fighter jets.

In June 2022, Juice visited the US with another Ukrainian pilot, call sign Moonfish, to lobby for F-16s for Ukraine.[17] Sean Penn joined Juice and Moonfish to help their advocacy efforts.[8] The pilots met with US lawmakers to discuss modern weapons systems needed in Ukraine.[3] Juice and Moonfish met with Adam Kinzinger in his office in Washington, D.C.[18] As a result of that meeting, Adam Kinzinger introduced the «Ukraine Fighter Pilots Act» to the United States House of Representatives on June 17, 2022. The bill was cosponsored by Chrissy Houlahan, Ted Lieu, Susan Wild, Tom Malinowski, Abigail Spanberger and Mike Levin.[19][20][21][22]

In June 2023, Juice was quoted in a CNN article.[11]
